Close your eyes, tap your heels together and say, “There’s No Place Like PSC!” Travel down the yellow brick road to PSC’s “Land of Oz” for our 60th Anniversary Celebration. Start the evening with a VIP reception, complete with open bar and lavish hors d’oeuvres. (VIP tickets sold separately.) Enjoy a sit-down dinner and dessert. Dance the night away with live music. Enjoy a performance by the Overbrook String Band performing as the Scarecrow (during the VIP reception). Enjoy a special anniversary multi-media presentation, including “60 Years of Stories.” Enjoy a special performance by Tom Lawton. Tom was commissioned to create a musical composition to commemorate PSC’s 60th Anniversary. Watch for more details and invitations. Join seniors from around the city as we blow out the candles on our unique take on a birthday cake for your favorite senior center! Buttercream will be here with their famous Cupcake Truck providing free cupcakes for the first 300 seniors at 1pm, followed immediately by a dance party and contest, Wii game tournament and introduction, and party! Join the fun with games, prizes, balloons, snacks, music and treats! Independence Blue Cross volunteers will sponsor games and activities as part of the United Way Day of Caring program.

60th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT & RECEPTION
Tuesday, September 22
1:00pm • PSC Main Branch Auditorium
PSC’s Composer-in-Residence Tom Lawton will debut his composition celebrating our 60th anniversary and music in the lives of our members. This new work was created with the help of PSC’s senior members. The concert will be recorded live for distribution on CD in the fall. Meet Tom in person after the performance at a free reception with refreshments and snacks. Tom will also perform this new work at the 60th Anniversary Gala on Friday, October 16, at Penn’s Landing Caterers. Tom’s residency with PSC is made possible by a grant from the American Composer’s Forum (“ACF”) provided through its Community Partner’s Program with funding from the William Penn Foundation. Exit Realty Helps Seniors Beat the Heat in North Philadelphia

PSC and Exit Realty “The Waterfront Group” Help Seniors in Tioga, Temple and North Philadelphia Philadelphia Senior Center (PSC), with community partner Exit Realty “The Waterfront Group, launched the first ever “FAN FAIR” in North Philadelphia. A fan distribution was held at the Tioga Branch of PSC on Thursday, August 2, 2007 from 10am – Noon. Fan participants age 55 or older who presented identification with a birth date on it received a free box fan. EXIT Realty “The Waterfront Group” underwrote the cost of fans for the first 100 participants. Home Depot delivered the fans free of charge. Click here for Media Advisory



PSC and Comcast-Spectacor Distribute Fans to Help Seniors Beat Summer Heat

In response to the current heat wave, Philadelphia Senior Center (PSC), with community partner Comcast-Spectacor, intensified its outreach efforts to the elderly and launched its annual "FAN FAIR." A fan distribution was held at Philadelphia Senior Center on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 from 9am - 11am. Fan participants age 55 or older who presented identification with a birth date on it received a free box fan. PSC's Mission

The mission of the Philadelphia Senior Center (PSC) is to assist people in meeting their basic needs and enhancing their quality of life. PSC assists older adults in optimizing their functional ability and provides them with opportunities for active involvement, helping to prevent isolation and dependence. PSC also seeks to improve conditions for those older adults who are impoverished.
PSC provides leadership in advocating on issues affecting the lives of older adults, with special focus on representing their diverse needs and interests. Philadelphia Senior Center is accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers

Summary Founded in 1949, Philadelphia Senior Center has been serving the region's older adults for over half a century. The Center is the largest in Pennsylvania and the third oldest in the country. Over 8,000 senior citizens are served annually: those who come into the Center and those who are homebound. PSC is accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers. For over 50 years, Philadelphia Senior Center (PSC) has created opportunities for mature adults to live healthy, active lives. Our experience enables us to enrich and support the lives of thousands older people each year. PSC offers over 50 different classes and programs weekly; a nutritious lunch; and counseling services ranging from healthcare to housing. Philadelphia Senior Center and its branches provide a place for people age 55 and older to come and enjoy life-long learning with their peers or learn about assistance and entitlements for older adults.
