Studio Arts Arts On The Avenue

PSC ART CLASSES

Philadelphia Senior Center houses a lovely Art Studio flooded with natural light. Our location on the Avenue of the Arts provides the perfect setting for classes in a variety of media for the beginners to the more advanced. For specific information, please call (215) 546-5879, ext. 229.

DRAWING/MIXED MEDIA

Mondays 10am - 12 Noon Art Studio

Learn drawing and painting using mixed media. Deborah Deery provides group as well as individual instruction to assist students in utilizing various media and creative skills. This class is open to all levels of instruction. Still life and models are also used. Materials provided or bring your own. Cost: 3 PSC Coupons

Thursdays 10am - 12 Noon Art Studio

Learn various techniques of painting, using different types of paint. Structured class setting includes work with models and still life. Class is lead by Ruslan Khais. Materials are provided or bring your own. Cost: 3 PSC Coupons

Join Jennifer Wankoff and Lana Heckendorn for a fun and interesting class in ceramics. Everything is done free hand -- no molds, and then fired in the kiln. No experience necessary and all supplies are included. Cost: 4 PSC Coupons per class

Join us for fun and relaxations! This group is a great way to feel good on Fridays. No need to sing well or even carry a tune. This group uses props during the songs and everyone is welcome. Cost: FREE

This lively reading and discussion group meets every week. You are encouraged to bring your own work or the work of some of your favorite poets to read and share. Cost: Free

BIBLE STUDY

PSC Health and Wellness Opportunities Experts from the Surgeon General to the National Sporting Goods Association are encouraging older adults to participate in regular health and wellness activities. Philadelphia Senior Center provides a variety of health and fitness classes and programs designed to stimulate the mind and body. STEPS ENHANCED FITNESS

Mondays - 1pm in Rooms A & B

Wednesdays - 1pm in Room A

This class meets three times a week for a full hour. This one-hour workout will focus on stretching, flexibility, balance, low impact aerobics and strength training exercises. Join Edwina Roberts as she leads this new class! Provided by PCA and funded by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. Cost: FREE

T'Ai Chi is an ancient martial discipline which promotes health and spiritual well-being. T'Ai Chi develops sharp mental focus and concentration. Chi Kung is a Chinese exercise system that conducts movement with calm and gentle breathing exercises, providing peace, harmony, strength and health, while increasing your flow of energy. Cost: 3 PSC Coupons

BODY DYNAMICS

Mondays 10:15am in Room B

This class improves flexibility and balance. It also incorporates individual bodybuilding. Listen to music that will enhance and stimulate you while you exercise. Sheila Zagar leads this class. Cost: 1 PSC coupon

WILD CARD REV UP

Wednesday is "Wild Card Wednesday Rev-Up!" On Wednesdays, a different low-impact exercise tape designed specifically for seniors will be shown. Now is a great opportunity to try something with fresh new music, moves and motivation! Fridays Rev-Up tape will remain the same. Cost: FREE

BELLY DANCING

Fridays 10:30am Lindquist Hall

This exciting new class is especially designed for beginners and for those who want to brush up on basic techniques. You will learn basic moves most often seen in Cabaret/Egyptian style belly dance. Moves include shoulder and hip shimmies, hip drops and lifts, snake hips and figure-eights, rib circles and rib drops, as well as basic dance posture and arm placement. Wear comfortable clothing and slippers/dance shoes or bare feet. Cost: 3 PSC Coupons

FITNESS CENTER

Monday through Friday 8:30am - 4pm

The Fitness Center is now up and operating. We will be operating under the 'buddy' system. A 'buddy' can be any adult, a member or nonmember or a fellow workout partner and they must be present while you workout. If you are interested in using the fitness center, you need to have the necessary paperwork filled out by your doctor and return it to the Program Window. Once that is completed and returned to the Program Window, you will receive a Fitness Card and then you will be permitted to workout. WALKING AT THE SPORTING CLUB

Join the walking club at the Sporting Club at the Bellevue for a walk around their indoor track. To be issued a "Walking Club Card", you must have current medical permission and waiver forms filled out by a doctor. This card is necessary for admission to the Sporting Club. ELECTRONIC DARTS

Competition and fun are the name of this game. The electronic dart board features soft tip darts and is available all day on the 2nd Floor Lounge.

Play in the 1st Floor Lounge any time ; watch or participate

TV/MOVIES

The Big Screen TV is on everyday, except Thursdays, for your enjoyment. Also, watch recent and old time favorite movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1pm in the Auditorium.

Health Lectures & Screenings

Representatives from local healthcare organizations visit for lectures and screenings. Topics include diabetes education, nutrition, hot weather tips and more. Local professionals frequently provide free screenings such as blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, hearing and vision. Please call (215) 546-5879, ext 229 for details.

Jefferson Family Medicine at PSC

Health and Social Services Suite

PSC is committed to supporting the total older person by integrating the delivery of health and social services at its Main Branch. In the Health and Social Services Suite, you can see a Jefferson Health System doctor or nurse practitioner for primary health care. Then step down the hall to meet with a social worker to sign up for senior citizen benefits or to join the senior center. See Jefferson Family Medicine at PSC for office hours and more information about this unique partnership Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
